the tasting room

Open every day of the week — a covered porch at the edge of the vines, pouring the full range of current releases by the glass and flight, alongside a short menu of cheeses and snacks.

what we make

Nearly three dozen bottlings from one small farm — hand-harvested, fermented on native yeasts, and bottled by gravity. The range changes with every vintage; no two years are alike.

it starts with an upside-down tree

Walter Channing, among his vines

Walter Channing was a sculptor who rescued fallen trees — hauling them out of swamps and salvage yards, carving them, and planting them roots-up against the sky. In 1982, on a potato farm in Bridgehampton, he planted something right-side-up for a change: Chardonnay.

He named the winery for his daughters. Forty years on, it remains a family farm — twenty-eight acres of vines threaded between his sculptures, making wine slowly: picked by hand, fermented on wild yeast, bottled by gravity.

  1. 1982Walter plants the first Chardonnay vines on the old potato fields.
  2. 1996Larry Perrine — one of the founding figures of Long Island viticulture — joins as managing partner.
  3. 2001Chef-turned-winemaker Christopher Tracy arrives; native-yeast ferments, field blends, and skin-fermented whites follow.
  4. todayRoughly 14,000 cases a year across three dozen bottlings, farmed by a crew led by longtime vineyard manager Abel Lopez. Walter is gone, but his trees still hold the sky.
